Tubeless tyres

The sealant used with these often fixes small punctures. If not, remove one side of the tyre (see here). Pour out the sealant, dry the area around the hole in the tyre and fix the puncture with your repair kit. Apply some of the sealant all around the exposed bead and pour the rest back into the tyre. Work the tyre back into the rim and re-inflate it. If you’re out and about, you can fit an inner tube and repair the tyre later.

RELEASE BRAKES

Most rim brakes on modern bikes have one of the following quick-release mechanisms.

V-brakes Pull back the rubber boot between the two brake arms. Squeeze the arms together with one hand, push down on the anchor point and pull the noodle pipe away with the other. To close them, squeeze the brake arms together and reverse the process, then test the brake.

Cantilever brakes One end of the wire that straddles the wheel, connecting the two brake arms, is held by a small nut. Push the brake arm, holding this end of the wire against the wheel rim. Pull the nut away from the brake arm to unhook the cable and release the brake. To close it again, just reverse the process, then test the brake to make sure it’s OK.

Caliper brakes Look for a small quick-release lever on one brake arm. Simply raise it to release the brakes. After you close the lever to close the brakes again, test them to make sure they’re OK.

Road bikes Some brakes fitted to road bikes are released by pressing a button on the brake lever. Some reset the next time the brake lever is squeezed, others need the button pressing back to its original position.

Hub brakes These make life a bit more complicated; look for a step-by-step video online or get an expert to help.
